Geocaching with Shark13
Welcome to my home base for Geocaching. I took up the "sport" while on vacation in Key West, and now I'm
hooked. The concept is simple: People have taken the time to "hide" a cache, usually with some sort of loot in it,
and then posted the GPS coordinates on the Geocaching Home Page.
Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to find these caches using only your GPS and whatever means of transportation
it requires to get there.
Before you go and load the truck, don't expect to find great physical riches within these "hidden treasures". To me,
the place you find is usually the prize. My first actual "box" was located adjacent to a fantastic swimming/diving area
that I would have never known about. My third cache led me to an island State Park that once again, I would
have never visited. So please, don't misunderstand the game. Geocaching is about discovering and sharing
this wonderful planet we call home.
This page is going to be my trophy wall of found caches. I hope to begin hiding a few caches as well; however, Myrtle Beach seems
to be short on "fantastic places." Below you will find pictures and some information on each of the
caches that I have found. If you would like more information on Geocaching, drop
me a line or visit the Geocaching Home Page.
PLEASE NOTE: The information below may contain SPOILERS as
to the location of a cache.
Cache #1: USA, all the way South
Hidden by: metacognate 12/11/01
Found/Logged on: January 8, 2002

Southern Most Point. Seeing as this was as far South as I could go, I figured this a good place to start. This
is actually a "virtual cache", which means no box to find, the place is the treasure. Unfortunately, the number
of "displaced" people makes this a quick stop or you will be flooded with photo takers. I had visited this spot last year
on vacation, but I was unfamiliar with the concept at this time. The area is rich in history and shopping (Duval Street
runs almost parallel), and you are about 90 miles from Cuba at this point. (It's actually
about 110 miles, but 90 sounds better.)

Cache #2: Government Cut Cache
Hidden by: Team C 12/25/01
Found/Logged on: January 9, 2002

First to find my first box. This was my first actual cache containing items and a log. After taking a not-so-pleasant
detour through a mangrove field, we re-grouped and found a much easier way to the location. This particular cache
has only been hidden since Christmas, so we were the first team to locate it. Out of the cache we took:
1 lotto ticket, a Monopoly key chain (I didn't take this one.), a Mazda Miata, and a pin. In return, we left:
a watch (off of someone's arm nonetheless), an earring, matches w/ striker, and a copy of Jimmy Buffet's
Millennium Concert Live. After logging our visit in the notebook and repacking the container, we considered jumping in but
decided to wait for warmer weather. Below are two pictures, one of the general area and one of the immediate area
of the actual cache. Since people are continually looking for these, I have opted to not auto load these images.

Cache #3: Indian Key Cache
Hidden by: DPS Dave 7/23/01
Found/Logged on: January 10, 2002
DISCOVERED CACHE
Third cache, second box, hefty fee. This cache is located on Indian Key Island, and is only accessible by
boat. I highly recommend you bring your own. We had spent the day searching for the cache on Plantation Key
with no luck, so we figured this one would put us back on track. A boat rental place is nearby if you need
to rent a kayak, or you can take the easy route and have them motor you over in about 5 minutes. We opted for
the easy boat ride; however, at the cost of $32.50 for the two of us this was not an easy cache on the wallet. Once on
the island you can take an official tour of the island or you can head off on your own. The tour is very
informative, but I would go out on my own. The entire area is beautiful, but beware of the poison trees and
ugly, non-biting, crab spiders. We found the container about 5 minutes before the boat arrived to take us back,
so we didn't have much time to browse. We took: GeoCaching Key Chain,
1 lotto ticket, and the Peace Frog sticker. We left: a Walk-Man, a free Pepsi, and a Sketchers key chain.

Cache #4: Huntington Beach
Hidden by: Elkinsj 1/21/02
Found/Logged on: January 24, 2002
DISCOVERED CACHE
Easy find. This box was located on a trail within the Huntington Beach State Park. I've visited the park
a couple of times before, and in fact, was planning to hide a cache there in the future. (Unfortunately,
I will not be hiding this cache due to the close proximity. Sorry.) H.I. and
myself hiked down the small trail to the immediate area, and I noticed the cache from about
15 to 20 yards away. We took a few sharks teeth, of course. We left: a pill box, some
Mardi Gras beads, a TN shot glass, a personalized shark jack, and a working ink pen for the next
finders.

Cache #5: River Stash 01
Hidden by: Terry 1/13/2001
Found/Logged on: January 26, 2002
DISCOVERED CACHE
Another local find. I took my cousin Ladd with me for his first time out. We found the area with some
ease (and the help of MapQuest), but the actual cache alluded us for about 20 minutes. Finally,
with a little "guidance" from the cache hider's brother, we were back on track and located the
guardian flamingo. We took a small amount of money, a knife key chain, and a Technical Sgt. Air Force pin.
In return, we left a Mexican calendar, NY golf tees, golf balls, shot glass, and a personalized
shark jack. With this particular cache, I left a new notebook in a Ziploc bag to replace a
mildewed,
water logged post-it note pad. A funny side note: I accidentally broke the cache pencil, and I brought
home the old note pad. Ooooops.

Cache #6: Make a Wish

DISCOVERED CACHE
My penny missed the well, but we didn't miss the cache. This is a local cache that was just placed
at the end of January. The cache is located in someone's front yard, but everyone seemed nice
and friendly. We were the first to find this box and it actually contained my first Travel Bug.
Penelope was tucked away in her own Ziploc bag, and she has no definite
plans for travel. I hope to release this beauty when I make a trip to the mountains. We took a
convertible Corvette and we freed Penelope. We left a key chain, golf tees, Tranquility bracelet,
shot glass, HRC Anniversary sticker, and a personalized Shark jack.

Cache #7: Alice's Grave
Hidden by: John 6/5/01
Found/logged on: February 9, 2002

Morbid at first to think that someone would log a cache site at a grave, this is a must
for anyone who likes a ghost story. Alice wonders the night looking for her engagement ring, and
anyone who is willing to circle her grave thirteen times (yes, 13 times...really.) will feel
a tug at their ring. Well, H.I. and myself made this the first of four on the day and I must admit....
no tugging. This entire area is beautiful and the above picture is just as we found it. Try to plan
this trip for late in the afternoon or early evening time. This being a virtual cache, we neither
took or left.

Second cache of the day. A small park on the water in the heart of Georgetown housed this site.
The picnic area is in a remote corner that is only accessible by walking a short distance. The area
is beautiful and I highly recommend a picnic. We took a divot tool, a Big Red Truck, and some cash that was
deposited by the last finders. We left: a Sketcher's key chain, a 3 beaded bracelet, a Hard Rock Cafe lanyard,
some Mardi Gras beads, and a tire pressure tool.

Third cache for the day. We had just searched an hour+ unsuccessfully for a different cache, so
this was a very nice rebound. Drove by the correct road, which ended up being a $5.00 mistake, but
quickly corrected ourselves thanks to H.I.'s feminine sense of direction. Lots of trees cover the actual
location, so some strategy is involved. This area is a reminder of the damage done to the Frances Marion Forest
by Hurricane Hugo. We took: the Santa Pez, the yo-yo, silly putty, and Air Force pin. We left: a Teletubby,
a Chicago Bulls shot glass, beads, a Dragonfly pin set, and a personalized Shark jack.

I took my cousin BudAR15 with me for his first attempt at
Geocaching. After an all-nite PlayStation marathon, we set out for this cache a little after 8:00 am. I worked
a quarter of a mile from this spot for over 6 years and never knew this place existed. After a short walk up the path
and several minutes in the foliage, I spotted a very strange phenomenon growing from within a tree. The rest is history.
We took: a poker chip, a para-trooper, and a GeoCaching is Fun pen. We left: a golf divot tool,
a small gem, and a cigar snip.

Cache #11: Where the Tigers Play
Hidden by: Gene Garris 5/19/01
Found/Logged on: February 23, 2002

This was our second cache of the day and damn if Bud didn't find it. The Botanical Gardens at Clemson
hold a lot of memories for both of us; however, Bud was actually married here a few years ago, so it was
fitting for him to actually find the cache. The GPS went a little crazy due to some tree interference, but
Bud was able to locate it while I deciphered the clue out loud. We opened the box at just short of 9 AM to find
that someone had already visited the site earlier that morning. We took: $2 bill, fish pin, the monkey fist, and
the Palm GeoTravel Bug. We left: golf balls, 2 green rings, a shot glass (covered in ducks), and a purple Yo-Yo
that I had retrieved from the Hugo Memorial Cache located near Charleston, SC. (As one side note: Imagine
taking your small children to the Gardens to play early on a Saturday morning just to be met by two scruffy men in camo,
carrying a backpack, discussing the spirituality of car jacking.)

Cache #12: Oconee
Hidden by: Gene Garris 5/19/01
Found/Logged on: February 23, 2002
Our 3rd "official" cache of the day, this one was a lot harder then it should have been. BudAR15 and myself spent 2 hours
plus climbing all over Stump House Tunnel looking for a cache that appears not to be. Upon arriving
at this location, we took the WAY long way around an entire lake. To add insult to injury, the search sheet lists this
cache as a silver paint can, yet we found a green .50 caliber ammo case. After all obstacles were cleared, I did "release"
Penelope the Travel Bug into this cache. (As of this update, she has already been picked up and is in
someone's possession.)
We took: $1 dollar bill, an AWOL GI, and a flower vase. We left: golf balls (Notice the Trend-of-the-Day here?), a Pentium CPU chip, and
a portable ashtray. And as an exclamation point on this cache site: not only did we manage to only snap one picture, but later that night I dropped and shattered the vase that Bud had wanted.

DISCOVERED CACHE
I could not have planned my 13th cache any better then this one. After logging 3 finds with BudAR15 on the
previous day, I had a chance to log one on this day with my family. I guess all of my ranting and raving finally broke them
as they loaded up the car and followed me to Anderson SC for this site. The complex at which the cache is located
was new to me and I must admit that I am quite impressed with the Anderson Park System. The four of us made the
peaceful stroll past the screaming frogs towards the coordinates. At one point I think I was standing on the box, but it was
actually my dad who found it some five minutes later. (Even worse, my mom had even pointed out a pink marker in the ground beside my
foot when I was practically on the box and I still didn't see it.) We took: puzzle box, drink holder,
pink girl super ball, American flag pin, and a Mardi Gras pin. We left: a TN quarter, a shot glass, an orange super ball,
some ham, and a Shark figurine. For the record: they all loved it and are planning to do some hunting
of their own.

Found/Logged on: February 27, 2002
DISCOVERED CACHE
Another first to find, but at quite the expense. The walk out isn't that bad; however, the day we made the trip we
had 30 mph gusting winds with a wind chill in the 40's. H.I. and myself made a quick trip down to Georgetown to log this
one and another, somewhat related cache site. I've noticed this area several times in passing, but
was unaware of the road out to the bridge. We took a wrench and a cookie. We left a golf ball and a watch.

The follow-up cache to "Bridge to Nowhere" and quite a surprise indeed. This cache is located in
downtown historic Georgetown, and I cannot think of a better place to hide it there. Had a chance
to meet and talk with Jarboyone who helped hide both caches. After a very pleasant conversation on our
new pastimes, H.I. and myself set out to find the actual cache involved with the cool area
we were in. With the help of a "warm" clue it only took H.I. about 2 minutes to find it. Great spot
for lunch or dinner in the Summer. We took letter opener and lighter. We left golf balls and tees, an
Olympic pin, and some bacon.

MACDADDY W/ CACHE
The first cache logged with my good friend MacDaddy, and not too terribly
far from the house, this is the third cache I've logged that was hidden by Buferd. A very beautiful area on the inlet,
I was familiar with the road in, but not the trail. We each had our own GPS and were delighted when we found out exactly
how close they were together in degrees. The actual cache was somewhat hidden and the only thing that caught my eye was a
set of gold beads in the jar. I took a Reading pin (for the Magic Gray), and a small heart shaped candle. I left
a golf ball and a shot glass.

This was the first of three caches on the day after an overnight trip to Charleston. This park
was a pleasant surprise from the traffic and hustle of Hwy 17. H.I. and myself made the short walk in
and found the area with no problem. After scoping out the Tower it didn't take us long to find this one.
I kicked myself for going the long way around to get to this one. We took the SC pin (for the Magic Gray Backpack) and
the Peace Frog sticker (To join the one from Key West). We left a shark and magnet.

DISCOVERED CACHE
Second of three on the day and by far the longest, most tiring walk all day. We started the path on
what turns out to be the long/wrong way. We managed to see two Red Wolves; however, they were
somewhat leery of us and remained in the shade. This was another one of those situations where I
overreacted and walked all over and around the thing for over 15 minutes. I won't even mention the fact that
mosquitoes are very territorial in this area. The last person had done a great job of disguising the
cache with underbrush, so I tried to replicate their work when I left. We took: the foreign coins and currency,
along with the wild flower seeds. We left: a sports watch, beads, a shot glass, and a half of our hemoglobin
as a bargaining tool for freedom from the bugs.

DISCOVERED CACHE
Our third and final find for the day, and our second attempt at this particular cache. The Palmetto Trail crosses the
state of South Carolina and you actually start at the head. (Or maybe the tail of the trail. Not sure
who decides those things.) This time we got an early jump and had plenty of light for the short hike in. Once
across the road it was no time before H.I. spotted this one. We had read in the clues that clearing fires had just missed the
cache and sure enough it was beside the one tree in the area not burned. We took both $$ bills and another SC pin. We left a pig,
assorted stickers (Hard Rock, Body Glove), a Heinz pickle pin, and a climbers clip key chain.

After a nine month layoff, it was nice to get back out into nature. As you may have read above, there was a cache
previously hidden here; however, the original had to be "archived" and "replaced" due to a "cache disappearance".
My friend Vandal accompanied me this time out, and luckily the weather
was beautiful. This second cache is hidden in a much cleaner, more scenic part of the area and can be found at almost
the exact coordinates given to you. I ended up only taking a clown, and leaving a "swell" looking swine.
